Optimising Page Title of a Blog

WordPress by default has a very poor naming structure for <title> tag in post or a page. It simply displays blog name while on homepage and displays Name of Blog, “Blog Archive” and then title of post. Does not look very good and can be improved if we look at the SEO aspect of it.

How to make it SEO Optimised?

Well there are several ways in which you want title to be arranged. But I would suggest that firstly post title should be displayed and the the blog’s name for a single post. On homepage it should display blog name followed by blog description.

How to Implement This?

Ofcourse this would be your next question. Implementation is very easy and works on all WordPress versions and themes. Open your theme file’s header.php and find <title> and </title> tags and delete every thing between them. (Make a backup of header.php incase something goes wrong.)

And now in between <title> and </title> insert this:

<?php if ( is_home()) { ?>
<?php bloginfo(‘name’); ?> – <?php bloginfo(‘description’); ?>
<?php } else { ?>
<?php wp_title(‘ ‘); ?>
<?php if(function_exists(“UTW_ShowTagsForCurrentPost”)) : ?>
<?php if (is_tag()) { UTW_ShowCurrentTagSet(‘tagsettextonly’); ”; } ?>
<?php echo ‘ – ‘; ?>
<?php bloginfo(‘name’); ?>
<?php endif; ?>
<?php } ?>

This tag is the one currently used here so you can get fair idea on how it will work on your blog. This code also supports Tag pages and will optimise them as well which otherwise be left with duplicate titles.

Advanced Page Title Optimisation

Well this was the only basic portion. There’s more to title editing. What if you want separate post title and separate post page title? Well You can use All in One SEO plugin for it. When you install this plugin, while writing a post, it asks for page title. Just enter it and you will have 2 custom titles. :grin:

  2. I’ve just started using this widget within the last couple weeks on all my blogs and so far I really like. I think it’s something word press could/should have done to it’s platform to begin with but im thankful for the user community for sure.

  3. Yup, it will definitly change the title tags, btw I am interested in knowing what you think about adding the title of the blog to the header in h1/h2 and its effects on seo. I recently redesigned my blog and ended up having to remove the h2 titles by using images…
