Firefox 4 beta does not save tabs on closing

If you have been using Firefox 4 beta (12) recently, you may have noticed that Firefox does not save opened tabs and opens the browser with a fresh state. This behavior continues even if you have set the option “Show my windows and tabs from last time” under Tools>>Options>>General. Well don’t know whether its by design or bug, but Firefox wants you to set lot many other options manually before you get the old behavior back.

To achieve so, type ‘about:config’ in the address bar. Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences. Now locate the following preferences and set them to true if they are not by double clicking on the preference.

  • browser.tabs.warnOnClose
  • browser.warnOnQuit
  • browser.warnOnRestart
  • browser.showQuitWarning [This option is to be set only for beta versions starting from 12]

And now you will observe, that old behavior is back. Well so much for the usability. Hoping that by the 4.0 final version, Firefox makes it more easy than to change 4 preferences manually like this.

  1. I wonder if I’m the only one that thinks that firefox is moving backwards. I think each new version removes something that I liked in the prior version!

    1. I don’t think so. Firefox has really improved with each new version and such things are just minor annoyances.

  2. I am surprised to know that firefox 4 have many problem. I am using firefox3.6. And I think its much better than 4.

  3. Ahh! Finally!! Thank you much for this. I had searched before and couldn’t find anything on how to get this great feature back!! Much suffering has been taken.. but you have ended this. You sir.. are a god!

    1. Dito – was highly annoying, having to leave on the computer.
Also, because there is NO way to add bookmarks as of yet on my firefox.
It simply refuses. Still trying to solve that.

  4. A big thank you, this worked perfectly. I’m a more advanced user than most and I still didn’t know about the 4th option this site mentioned. This fix will be nearly impossible for average users. I hope this will be resolved in the final release. Thanks again.

    1. Glad it helped you. And me too hoping that final version contains an easy fix for this rather than asking us to fix like this.
