Google Chrome on Windows 2000/2k? Works with my method

Method Updated as of November 23, 2009 – Should work.

Yes, I have finally managed to decode the japanese language finally. And not only managed to decode it, but I will provide you with an easier way and less files to work with. And will also tell you on how to sort a common error with that type of Installation on Windows 2000.

For those who are wondering, where this japanese language concept came in here’s the link. Actually Google Chrome was made only for Windows XP and Vista. Installer won’t even run on Windows 2000. But a japanese guy founded a method to make it work on Windows 2000 too. But since the page was in japanese and even google translator provided not much help, not much people could make it work on Windows 2000. I tried not only learning his method but also came up with a simpler method too.

So here is my method to make Chrome work on Windows 2000.

  1. Make sure you have the following patch in 2000 Installed: Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 (KB891861 and KB935839
  2. If you want to use Chrome v3.0, also apply this patch – KB915958v2
  3. Download the crm2k32.zip file from here.
  4. Run the CHROME2K.exe file and apply settings accordingly.
  5. Download Chrome using the button in CHROME2K.exe after applying the compatible registry and user agent. Do set locale for Chrome before downloading.
  6. And voila, Chrome now runs in Windows 2000.
  7. To uninstall Chrome run the offical uninstaller from Add Remove Programs and then run CHROME2K.exe file, check Display for uninstall and then select Clean up setting registry and Uninstall wrapper registry.

Please report if the above method does not work. Or a fix still needed for above method. Hope my method works for everybody.

Your link to KB915958v2 should be KB915985v2 (swith the last two digits) per the window that opens up. Also, I could not find a Knowledge Base article with KB915985-v2 on the Microsoft site. Can you tell me what this update does? I did find an old reference to KB915985 for Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server only from July 26, 2006. Do I need to apply this fix for a Windows 2000 (non-server) machine?

I have installed all the patches required to run Google Chrome in WIN2K in the order given on this page. And when I try running the Browser it gives me this error :

The procedure entry point not GetGeoInfoW not found in the dynamic linked library KERNEL.dll.

If someone knows how to tackle this one, please do let me know.

    Thanks

Did you install kernel32.dll wrapper and reboot your pc after install ?

I have the same problem. I installed the wrapper en reboot but I have the same problem again.I have the following error in your installer:
        Kernel32.dll version[5.2195.7099]
        Warning: required Kernel32.dll version 5.2195.7135

How can I install the 7135 version ?

        1. BlackWingCat

          You had better install MS07-035.

    Running win2000 with sp4, installed roll-up 1 (KB892861), KB935839 and KB915958v2.
When I run CHROME2K.exe, it shows my version of user32.dll is 5.2195.7032 instead of 5.2195.7133. Hence, IE6 flashes and crashes.
Is there a particular order these updates need to be installed? Which update contains the .7133 dll version?

    Thanks

    1. BlackWingCat

      ms07-017 has this user32.dll.

Thanks. It seems all the .dll’s are up to date now. I don’t get any error messages, but when I click on “Access Google Chrome Website”, my IE browser flashes on the screen momentarily and then disappears.

I think the problem cause of IE Add-on.
You had better download chrome from http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/symbols/.
