Yes, Internet can be informative, interesting, funny, unique, shocking and even a time waster. I am the prime example where I end up wasting time more than doing useful. Its very easy to get distracted while working online. Here I list some of the prime time wasters available on the internet:
- Social networking Communities - I will reason this as the biggest time waster. Thankfully, I don’t use them. Orkut is the biggest of them. And adding more are Facebook and MySpace.
- Forums - Yes sometimes they can be a timewaster. Once you start browsing, it gets difficult to leave a forum. For me Digit Forum is addictive.
- Messengers - They can be distractive. But thankfully they have a option of being invisible.
- Firefox - Don’t be surprised. Firstly I am not pointing Firefox as singular. But I am pointing to all tabbed browsers. And unfortunately there are only limited non-tabbed browsers available. So If you are working, I would suggest you to use IE 6. Its so easy to browse sites using tabs, that I get carried away and the original useful tab gets lost.
- Emails - Well, if you are the type who get a lot of forwarded funny mails, this can also contribute to a time waster on the net. Thankfully, I am not a part of such a group.
So what are the things which waste your time? And how do you manage to deal with them? I would love to hear your side.
PS: I have not linked to any site mentioned in the post. Do I need to? Else you will visit the sites and keep time wasting.

Well Nice list…
And seems these days I am wasting too much time on Orkut and Chattin (Its too addictive.)
In all these I even don’t get time to visit our beloved Digit forum.
Well yeah..I also seems to waste lots of time reading RSS feeds I subscribed(23 websites) . And yeah finding warez stuff also take a lotta time.
Guilty of 4 & 5. Well, It’s more like StumbleUpon+Firefox. Reading emails and RSS feeds take up my time, too.
Man, basically everything on teh inturweb is a time-waster.
I totally agree with your Firefox item there. I force myself to use IE at work as well just because FF is so functional and it’s so easy to browse and enjoy browsing especially with some of the add-ons you can get (like StumbleUpon, which brought me here).
It’s funny that IE 6 helps me focus because of its lack of functionality.
You covered pretty much of internet with that 5 points. Oh, you forgot p0rn. But I think you’re wrong - you allow yourself to become addicted with something, it’s not firefox/email/forums fault. And it’s the way internet worx …
Btw : read this “Stop Wasting Time Online” : http://howto.wired.com/wiredho.....egory=Work
Thanks for reminding me about porn. I almost forgot it since I don’t use it much. Yeah whatever you call it maybe addiction or time waster, it ultimately spoils time and hampers work.
I personally hate orkut, facebook, myspace, and all those social bookmarking sites. I also dont like to chat. I guess I dont waste as much time!
I put online games, especially mmporgs,at the first rank.Because I used to play Wow and guild wars for more than 10 hours a day.MY cousins left school due to a game.
